Snow and cold still a good bet

Seeing the latest 00zGFS and WRF-GFS, it still appears that a rather cold trough will be over our region for the weekend and into early next work week with 850mb temps between -9 and -15c depending on what models you choose to look at. And yes, snow still seems a likely bet with this cold air mass in place. Also to note is that tonights WRF-GFS is showing a PSCZ for early Sat morning after passage of a cold front in which we get numerous, though spotty showers, which may very well be in the form of snow or rain/snow mix depending on elevation. But with 850mb temps of -8 to -9c and 925mb temps of about -5c, any of those heavier showers should be in the form of snow. And as mentioned about the PSCZ, the 925mb map showes those converging winds at 42hrs....or 10am on tonights WRF. The PSCZ shows re-development for Sat afternoon given for what the model is worth.

Given the cold air place would guess snow levels for Sat afternoon around the 300-400ft range and then near 100ft or lower for Sun into Monday as our chilly/cold air still looks to be in place. 925mb temps down near -12c by Mon morning on tonights run. Thats cold! So again, some snow showers seem pretty likely with just about any one place seeing snow with a some amount of accumulation.

And then finally, our snow chance as per tonights 00zGFS, looks to last into Tue afternoon with 850mb temps still fairly chilly and showing -9c as weakening frontal system arrives at our coast by this time frame in which some more of the white stuff could be seen. But we`ll see what happens over the weekend.

  1. So Andy,

Just to make sure I got this. One convergence zone might be forming on Saturday morning, and then another on Saturday night/early Sunday morning?

  2. Brian... it does look that way here on tonights WRF-GFS, so you did read me right. Will have to see how this plays out and we can see what the models say tomorrow as well.
